In 2010, the Alaska Health Workforce Coalition (The Coalition)— a public-private partnership created to address health workforce issues—completed the Alaska Health Workforce Plan which was adopted by the Alaska Workforce Investment Board as well as Coalition member organizations. The Coalition has now merged with the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority’s (The Trust) Workforce Focus Area and its partners to strengthen and sustain the efforts and pledge support for an Action Agenda that will take the planned strategies forward into implementation. more...(off site)

Cook Inlet Tribal Council has established a career ladder for Alaska Natives and American Indians living within the Cook Inlet Region of Alaska. The rungs of the ladder start with becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), then climbing upward to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), then reaching the top rung: becoming a Registered Nurse (RN).
The Alaska Natives Into High-Demand Health Careers Program with Cook Inlet Tribal Council. CITC’s Healthcare Training Program provides opportunities in the fields of Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.), Licensed Practical Nurse (L.P.N.), and Registered Nurse (R.N.).
Della Keats/U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program The Della Keats/U-DOC Summer Enrichment Program is a program offered through the University of Alaska WWAMI Biomedical Program. The goal of the Della Keats/ U-DOC Program is to foster, affirm, and encourage high school students’ interest in the medical professions by allowing them to explore health-care careers and to obtain a valuable introduction to college life.

Teacher Industry Externship (TIE) program The Teacher Industry Externship (TIE) Program, hosted by Alaska’s regional AHECs, is part of a larger Department of Labor and Workforce Development program that provides professional learning opportunities for educators, and eventually their students. AHECs sponsor health care-related externships for educators working with students in grades 7-12.
PreMed Summit The purpose of the Alaska PreMed Summit is to provide information to anyone wanting to learn more about the process of becoming a physician. It is especially helpful for undergraduate and high school students, but non-traditional students, high school counselors, college advisors, and parents also benefit from the information presented.
Providence Summer Externship Program with Anchorage School District’s Health Careers Academy: Anchorage School District Seniors who are enrolled in ASD’s Health Career Academy work with various healthcare professionals at Providence Alaska Medical Center for 10 weeks in full-time paid positions during the summer after high school graduation. If you are an Anchorage School District Senior, please contact the SCAHEC Education Coordinator for details on how to apply.
Health Careers Explorer Camp with the University of Alaska/Anchorage The UAA Health Careers Explorers Program (HCEP) is a week-long summer experience for middle school students interested in pursuing a career in health care. The goal of this program is to expose students to various health occupations and to teach students essential skills and abilities of health care workers.
If you are interested in conducting a short-term (a few hours) to a long-term (a week or two) job shadow, you will be matched with a healthcare professional in a field that interests you. You can experience what a day in the life of a healthcare professional really looks like! Please contact the SCAHEC Education Coordinator for details on how to apply.
